Alain Colas
Thomas Schütte deliberately distances himself from the rules of traditional sculpture. His works are the result of a sort of bricolage using various materials which appear to be assembled amateurishly. In the monument to Alain Colas, a French sailor who was mysteriously lost in the Atlantic in 1978, the heterogeneousness of the materials underscores the uncertainity of the situation, while the haphazardly and in some cases incompletely shaped materials contribute to the crudeness of the expression.
