Cross-country skiing below the legendary World Cup finishing slope of the «Chuenisbärgli»: the route runs in several loops past some impressive wooden houses and farms on the valley floor. With moderate climbs and a few ascents, skiers enjoy a magnificent view of the Adelboden mountains.
Description
Adelboden’s «Chuenisbärgli» is the ultimate giant slalom slope, considered the most fearsome course on the World Cup calendar. The cross-country trail starts below the legendary piste where the FIS Ski World Cup has been held every year since 1967. With the Lohner, Wildstrubel and Fitzer in sight, the route runs southwards for about a kilometre until it reaches a bridge. Here, the trail crosses the Engstligenbach stream that divides the Adelboden valley floor.
Whilst the hotels, holiday homes, shops and restaurants mainly occupy the slope that faces the sun, the valley floor is given over to agriculture. Passing a number of farms and impressive wooden houses, skiers now follow the trail northwards in several loops until the Hotel Alpina. A large loop to the right leads them over the road and between two hills to the turning point.
Heading southwards again on a gentle to moderate gradient with a few descents, the trail reaches its highest point at the intersection with the Unterbirg cross-country trail, which is not part of this route. After a racy descent with a few bends, the bridge crosses the Engstligenbach once again. This is followed by two short climbs and gentle descents on the left-hand side of the valley, leading back to the starting point. Tip: weaker skiers can bypass the two loops, advertised locally as demanding, by continuing straight ahead.
