Intro

With views of the Tödi, the Hausstock and the Ortstock, cross-country skiing on the Grotzenbüel at around 1,500 metres above sea level is an unforgettable experience. The trail follows multiple loops and offers various combination options thanks to the open, Alpine terrain.

Description

The trail’s starting point is the Grotzenbüel mountain restaurant, which is easily accessible by gondola lift from Braunwald. Those going by foot can also get started in the northern part of the track via Unterstafel. One whole circuit including all loops is just under nine kilometres long. The terrain is Alpine and mostly open, while some sections of the track are slightly wooded and hilly. Passing by snow-covered Alpine huts, gnarled fir trees and romantic settings, you have a unique, high-Alpine panoramic view of the Ortstock, the Hausstock and the Tödi at all times.

Whether you’re a casual skier or more the sporty, ambitious type – depending on your ability and fitness, the individual loops in the area can be combined as you wish. The centre of the trails is located on the ‘Wissriet’ with a short practice and warm-up trail. From this point, you can break off and complete further laps in all directions.

However, you won’t encounter Braunwald’s most famous inhabitant on your way: Bartli the Dwarf – with his long beard, red trousers and green jumper – only emerges from his little hut from the beginning of June until October to welcome families to the Alps and show them his forest. Nevertheless, his kingdom is well worth a visit: Braunwald is car-free, family-friendly holiday destination high above the Glarner Grosstal. The village sits atop a sunny terrace with gorgeous views of the icy mountain peaks.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
