Intro
In the Mauritius rotunda in Konstanz Cathedral, St James holds staves and bags decorated with mussels for pilgrims setting out from here. From the Rhine, the «Schwabenweg» trail leads over the Seerücken ridge into Thurtal.
Description
Together, Konstanz and Kreuzlingen form the main area of tourist interest where the upper and lower parts of Lake Constance meet. Konstanz in southern Germany is known for its well-preserved mediaeval Niederburg quarter, home to the Romanesque minster with its range of architectural styles, including a Gothic spire. It is also at the majestic minster that our stage begins. Strolling through the beautiful old town, with several magnificently decorated houses as well as a long stretch of shops and restaurants, it’s not long before you reach the Swiss border. After passing through customs, you continue on through Kreuzlingen’s residential districts
before finally leaving civilisation behind you when you draw level with the old mill after around 45 minutes. A picturesque path hugs the Saubach River through the Schlossbüeltobel valley as you walk through the Bernrainbau forest reserve, past fields and meadows to Ellighausen. Continuing across agricultural land, you soon reach the shady Hagholz wood. A firepit in an idyllic location right beside the Chemebach stream is an inviting place to stop for a breather.
As you pass the ruins of Schleifenrain Castle and several hamlets, you’re bound to spot an impressive half-timbered house near Hinterer Ruberbaum. Despite its appearance, however, this is actually not an old building. It was constructed in 1990 in exactly the same location as the house it replaced, which had fallen into disrepair. This stage comes to an end a little later at Märstetten railway station. This rural community near Weinfelden in the Canton of Thurgau paints a pretty picture with its magnificent timber-framed buildings. With its houses laid out in an irregular arrangement known as a «Haufendorf», the village lies at the southern foot of the Ottenberg mountain. Specifically, it is located between the mountainside vineyards and the fertile meadows and farmland of the Thurtal valley, one of the largest sources of groundwater in Switzerland.
