White Carpet Engadin Precise lines, created in the stillness of the night
Intro
If you’re one of the first to hit the slopes early in the morning, you’re sure to be struck by the picture-perfect surroundings as you make your tracks through the pristine snow. The sharp grooves on the slope are still very fresh – milled in the silent darkness of the night. The “White Carpet” in the Engadin’s ski resorts is more than just a well-groomed slope. It is a great work of art, shaped by decades of experience and state-of-the-art technology. A silent stage for your first skiing experience of the day.
The Engadin
The Engadin is considered the cradle of winter sports, A place where sun, snow and endless slopes meet an incomparable light. In addition to the Corvatsch, which boasts one of the best freestyle parks in the world, and the legendary Corviglia above St. Moritz, many other ski resorts also await you – making this area a winter paradise for all levels.
Working overnight with precision and passion for your winter experience
The early bird gets the worm: untouched slopes, crunching snow under the boards, and a panorama bathed in the first of the day’s rays of sunshine. But what may seem effortless at first glance is actually the result of hard work – carried out in the stillness of the night.
Behind the white carpet is a whole team of specialists. One of these is Thomas Freitag, snow groomer driver at Engadin St. Moritz Mountains. He has been working at this for over 20 years – with a steady hand, technical precision, and genuine enthusiasm for his profession.
As a child, I was allowed to prepare cross-country trails with my father – since then, it has never let me go.
Thomas Freitag
Born in Elm in the canton of Glarus, Thomas has been living in the Engadin – his own personal winter paradise – for three years now. He has now been working as a snow groomer driver at Engadin St. Moritz Mountains for over 18 seasons. Precision, experience and passion for the snow make him a real professional who gives the white carpet its shine.
Today, Thomas is one of those who rolls out the white carpet at night. His shift begins after the evening security check by the patrollers – only once they have given the green light is the team allowed to start. Safety takes top priority.
Then the real work begins. Row by row, Thomas guides his snow groomer over the slopes of the Corviglia until late into the night in all weathers – snowstorms, freezing rain or clear, starry nights. Accurate to the centimetre, with sensitivity and experience.
The best compliment for us is when our guests appreciate the white carpet.
High-tech meets nature: the SnowSat in use
Engadin St. Moritz Mountains uses the SnowSat digital snow measurement system to ensure that the snow quality is perfect, but also to protect the area’s natural resources. It shows drivers exactly how much snow there is underneath the vehicle. This means that snowmaking only comes into play when it is really necessary – which in turn saves water, energy and resources. A quiet contribution to conscious winter sports.
For all early risers
Then it gets light. The first of the lifts open. For a short moment, the white carpet is all yours.
The air is cold, the snow is biting – and you make your turns through the grooves formed in the dark. The light plays on the surface; the world is calm. Up here, the gliding of skis, your own breath, and the expansive view over Engadin are all there is.
Whether you warm up slowly or pick up the pace straight away – the Engadin offers slopes for all levels. But what connects them is this one moment. At the very start of the day. Just for you.
