Intro

Between Lindenhof, Niederdorf, and Grossmünster lies Zurich’s historic center. Discover winding streets and squares, historic buildings and guild houses, as well as cafés that shape the charm of Zurich’s Old Town.

Old Town at a glance

Zurich’s Old Town stretches from Central to Bürkliplatz. It combines the left bank of the Limmat with Lindenhof and the right bank with Niederdorf. In between are landmarks like the Grossmünster and Fraumünster. Guild houses and historic squares tell the story of a time when Zurich was still surrounded by a city wall.

What you can experience

Exploring Niederdorf

In the Niederdorf, history meets modern city life. Between historic guild houses, boutiques, restaurants, and cafés, winding alleys lead across historic squares. During the day, the district is a popular destination for sightseeing, and in the evening it becomes a lively nightlife area.

  • Good to know: Niederdorf is car-free and easily accessible on foot from the train station.
  • Tip: Wear comfortable shoes – the streets in Niederdorf are cobbled.

Around the Grossmünster

The Grossmünster with its two towers is Zurich’s landmark. Climbing the Karlsturm gives you a magnificent view of the city, lake, and mountains. The tower climb is ticketed. In the winding streets around the Grossmünster, you’ll find cozy cafés, boutiques, and the Wasserkirche with Helmhaus.

  • Good to know: Renovations will take place in 2026–2027, and scaffolding will be in place.
  • Tip: Karlsturm access is free with the Zurich Card

View from Lindenhof

Lindenhof is one of Zurich’s most historic spots. Once a Roman settlement, today it offers a wonderful view of the Limmat, Grossmünster, and the rooftops of the Old Town. Grab a coffee, sit on a bench, and enjoy a traditional game of chess or the city view.

  • Good to know: Lindenhof is freely accessible and a popular meeting point all year round.
  • Tip: The water from the Lindenhof fountain (Hedwigbrunnen) is drinkable.
