Intro
The Roman Museum in Nyon tells the story of Noviodunum, a colony founded by Julius Caesar. Not far from the museum you also find an amphitheater, discovered only in 1996.
The town of Nyon was built on the site of the Roman Noviodunum, founded by Julius Caesar in the year 45 v. Chr. For this reason, still today, many an interesting find from the Roman period no doubt remains beneath the modern streets and buildings. Nevertheless, visits to the Roman Museum in Nyon take you on a trip back in time Roman times - providing fascinating insight into the lives of our possible forefathers.
The museum was opened in the Basilica of the Roman Forum in 1979 - an administrative building dating from the 1st century AD. And it’s here that finds from the Roman period discovered in the vicinity; amongst which, amphorae, lamps, ceramic tableware, glass urns, coins and jewelry, engraved stones and sculptures, are kept - and illustrate everyday life in Noviodunum. The wall paintings of the magnificent Villa of Commugny have been restored.
Every two years, the festival of archaeology films takes place inside this museum; through which, based on documentary films, new archaeological discoveries are presented.
