Arriving in Bern is already an impressive experience in itself. The journey into the city via the Lorraine Viaduct opens up a spectacular view of the River Aare and Bern’s old town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. The characteristic sandstone facades and the imposing cathedral will immediately catch your eye. Of all towns and cities in Switzerland, Bern possibly makes the best first impression. Its main station, one of the largest transport hubs in Switzerland and one of Europe’s top railway stations, is the gateway to a city full of experiences.

Discoveries in the old town

Bern’s old town is picturesquely situated on a peninsula formed by a loop of the River Aare. Its striking arcades stretch for six kilometres, making this one of Europe’s longest covered shopping promenades. Wander around to discover historic fountains offering fresh drinking water, hidden boutiques and traditional shops selling local products. A special highlight is the Zytglogge, a medieval clock tower whose mechanical carillon fascinates tourists and locals alike with a performance every hour on the hour.

Unlimited travel

Trams and buses not only offer you a convenient way to get around, but also let you experience the city from a different perspective. Spend one or more nights at an accommodation in the city to receive the Bern Ticket for the duration of your stay. This allows you free use of public transport in Bern and the surrounding area. Relaxation on the River Aare

Just a few steps away from the Federal Palace, the small Marzilibahn funicular will take you down to the River Aare. This nostalgic funicular has been connecting the old town to the riverbank since 1885 with a short but charming ride. Once at the bottom, take the opportunity to enjoy a picnic on the green banks of the River Aare or go for a walk along the water’s edge. On hot summer days, the river also becomes a popular swimming spot, where the locals like to go for a dip.

With a track length of 105m, the Marzilibahn funicular is one of the shortest funiculars in Switzerland.
  • 330 trips per day are undertaken by the Marzilibahn funicular on average
  • > 220 kilometres is the length of the Bern Mobil route network
  • 70.2 million passengers travelled on BLS trains, buses and boats in 2023.

The Gurtenbahn will take you up to Bern’s local mountain: the Gurten. It was modernised in 2024 and has since provided an even more comfortable ride to its destination, 840m above sea level.
Once at the top, an impressive panorama opens up over the city, with views stretching out as far as the Jura massif and the snow-capped Bernese Alps. The Gurten is not only a vantage point, but also a recreational paradise for the whole family. In addition to walking trails and playgrounds, there is also a summer sled run here, as well as an observatory, a miniature railway, two restaurants and countless barbecue spots and picnic areas.

For all those who enjoy being in the great outdoors, the Gurten also offers beautiful hiking trails. These lead through a landscape that offers plenty of variety. The cultural events over the summer also help to create a lively ambience.

The art of cheese-making in the Emmental valley

Scroll

The Emmental valley is known worldwide for its cheese. A visit to the Emmental Show Dairy offers visitors the opportunity to experience this tradition for themselves. You can get there easily by BLS train and PostBus. Visitors can expect a comprehensive world of experience centred around the ‘king of cheeses’. In the old farmhouse, dating back to the year 1741, private groups are given the opportunity to make their own cheese. Just like it was done in the past, this takes place over an open fire.

Both entertaining and informative: delve into the heart of cheese production in the Emmental Show Dairy.

The “King’s Way” multimedia exhibition leads guests into the fascinating world of Emmental cheese and tells the story of its production.

For families, the show dairy offers a fun and educational experience that gives children and adults an insight into the tradition and craft of cheesemaking. Between the experiences, refreshments are offered in the on-site restaurant and cheese shop.
