The hiking trail’s favourable altitude of 1,550 m, with Restaurant Turren as the starting and finishing point, offers heavenly views over a sea of clouds. After soaking up the views down into the Lungern valley basin, the route wanders south-west along the well-kept Alpine road around Finsterbüel. At Chuematt, you’ll find open terrain with an impressive panoramic mountain backdrop. The trail continues with an even, pleasant ascent to Luegi, which was once a strategic lookout and signalling point during medieval border disputes.

You then make the ascent to Breitenfeld, the highest point and the tour’s turnaround point. The inviting sun-drenched Alp of the same name lies far below the steep slopes from Arnifirst to Höch Gummen, disappearing into Tüfengrat in the west. The Alpine cottages, which lie close to one other, almost disappear under a blanket of white snow during winter. In summer, one of the largest and most beautiful High Alps in Obwalden is cultivated here. A pretty sight to see along the way is the ‘Maria zum Schnee’ chapel, which was built in 1729 to prevent livestock diseases after more than a hundred cows perished on the Alp over a period of three years.

You then follow the same route back, and once again enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the Bernese Alps that the open terrain has to offer. Shortly after reaching the tree line, you can already see the restaurant and train station in the distance, the finishing point of this winter hike.
