Stage 1: Bern – Neuchâtel

On the first stage, you begin the TCS Camping Grand Tour in Neuchâtel. The first interim destination is Murten, the charming medieval town on Lake Murten. The journey then continues on via Fribourg, Gruyère and Gstaad in the Bernese Oberland to Interlaken. The highlights on this stage: the Laténium archaeological museum in Hauterive, the Maison du Gruyère, the Maison Cailler in Broc, Lake Lauenen and the Tropical House in Frutigen. Stage 2: Bern – Lucerne

You begin the second stage of the TCS Camping Grand Tour in Bern. There are two UNESCO sites to discover on this stage: the old town of Bern and the biosphere in Entlebuch. From Bern, head towards Burgdorf, continue into the Emmental, and through the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch to Sempach. The highlights on this stage: Bern’s old town, Burgdorf Castle, the Emmental show dairy, the Kambly biscuit factory in Trubschachen, Hallwyl Castle and the Ornithological Institute in Sempach. Stage 3: Lucerne – Zurich

The third stage of the TCS Camping Grand Tour takes you from Lucerne to Stans and by ferry across Lake Lucerne to Gersau. From there, the tour continues on into the Mythen region, to Weggis, Einsiedeln and finally Rapperswil on Lake Zurich. The highlights on this stage: Along the way, visit the Stanserhorn with its CabriO cable car or Rigi – the “Queen of the Mountains” – from Weggis. A sightseeing visit to the monastery is a must in Einsiedeln, and in charming Rapperswil you can take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside promenade before heading along Lake Zurich to Zurich itself. Stage 4: Zurich – Maienfeld

The fourth stage of the TCS Camping Grand Tour leads through North-East Switzerland. From Zurich, we head towards the Rhine Falls, on to St. Gallen, and through the Rhine Valley to Werdenberg and Vaduz. Here, you can take a detour into Appenzellerland and visit the Säntis. The highlights on this stage: in addition to the Rhine Falls and the Säntis, a visit to the monastery of St. Gallen and the Abbey Library, which is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, is well worth your while on this route. Additional sights: Werdenberg, the “smallest town in Europe”, Vaduz, the capital city of Liechtenstein, and Maienfeld, the official Heidi village. The stage ends in Maienfeld.

Stage 5: Maienfeld – Locarno

From Maienfeld, you begin the fifth stage of the TCS Camping Grand Tour and get to know Graubünden at its best. The route takes you through the Vereina Tunnel to Guarda bei Scuol, the village of “Ursli with the Bell”. Continue through the Upper Engadin to sophisticated St. Moritz. From there, it’s down over the Julier Pass to the impressive Viamala Gorge near Thusis. After having crossed the San Bernardino Pass, you finally reach the southernmost point of Switzerland, Lake Maggiore in Ticino. The highlights on this stage: the typical mountain village of Guarda, the Swiss National Park, sophisticated St. Moritz, the Viamala Rhine Gorge and the cities of Bellinzona and Locarno. This varied stage ends in Locarno. TCS campsites on this route: TCS Camping Samedan, TCS Camping Thusis Viamala, TCS Camping Gordevio Valle Maggia.

Stage 6: Locarno – Zermatt

On the sixth stage of the TCS Camping Grand Tour, leading from Ticino to Valais, you leave two passes and several mountains behind you. On the first day, you explore Ticino under your own steam. On the second day, you then continue over the Gotthard Pass and Furka Pass, then along the Valais valleys to Zermatt. The highlights on this stage: A stop at the Gotthard Pass is of course a must. Make sure you visit the Rhône Glacier Ice Grotto on the way and take a photo of the Aletsch Glacier. Take a leisurely stroll through car-free Zermatt and marvel at the famous Matterhorn. Stage 7: Zermatt – Lac de Joux

The seventh stage of the TCS Camping Grand Tour leads from the Valais Alps via the medieval town of Leuk in the Rhône Valley, Sion and Martigny to the Vaud Riviera on Lake Geneva. The highlights on this stage: the castles of Sion, a visit to the Rochers de Naye, which can be reached by cog railway from Montreux, a walk through the Lavaux winegrowing area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. Stage 8: Lac de Joux – Geneva

The eighth stage leads from Lac de Joux, with a detour into the “underworld” and the “Grand Canyon of Switzerland”, and then directly to the end point of the tour, sophisticated Geneva. The highlights on this stage: the stalactite caverns and underground river in Vallorbe, the Creux du Van natural rock amphitheatre – the Grand Canyon of Switzerland – and the Jet d’eau, a fountain with a 140-metre-high water jet, and the landmark of Geneva. Whether you travel by van, camper van or caravan, you won’t miss any of Switzerland’s most famous and beautiful sights on this impressive round trip. But you will also get to know many small, unspoilt corners of Switzerland. To follow the suggested route with all eight stages, you will need approximately 21 days. Of course, you can extend or shorten the duration of the route however you like. The individual stages are also ideal for short trips if you don’t want to cycle the entire route in one go.
