Intro

The origin of its name is a mystery. But one thing is clear: the Dom is the highest Swiss mountain whose base is entirely in Swiss territory.

Dom (4,545m a.s.l.) at a glance

At 4,545 metres above sea level, the Dom is the highest peak whose base is entirely in Swiss territory. It belongs to the Mischabel group in Valais, and is the third-highest peak in the Alps, after Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa. There is some dispute over the origin of its name. It has been presumed that it was named in honour of the canon (Domherr) of Sion, Joseph Anton Berchtold, who was the first person to survey the Mischabel group in 1833. The ascent is made from Randa, and is comparatively easy at first, at least as far as the steep rock face in the middle of the tour that will challenge summiteers of every level.

Climbing four-thousander summits requires good physical health, meticulous preparation and technical skills in mountain sports. We recommend booking a mountain guide. Switzerland Tourism accepts no liability in this case.
