Billboards by the Lake: Bildstein|Glatz: Echo

Intro

Five iconic large-scale sculptures by the artist duo appear as photographic echoes on the shores of Lake Constance.

For over 25 years, the duo Bildstein | Glatz has been occupying public space with a radicalism that defies any form of decorative pleasantry. Their constructions are architectural interventions that confrontatively renegotiate the relationship between people, materials, and the environment. Made of steel, aluminum, and wood, they create monuments to dynamism—frozen moments of extreme movement, somewhere between a loop and a radical cut.

In the “billboards am see” project, this expansive force is reduced to the plane. Photographs of five of the duo’s projects serve as a visual surrogate: they document the original provocation and allow its echo to reverberate along the shores of Lake Constance. It is a kind of visual matryoshka: on the billboards, the large-scale sculptures—embedded in their original landscape—come to life once again in public space within a transformed context.
