Originally, Calonda Mars had little to do with spring, as it is a New Year's custom: When the Romans conquered the Bündnerland, they brought not only their language – from which the Romansh developed – but also
their Julian calendar. In 153 B.C., the Romans moved the beginning of the year to 1st January. However, this did not resonate with the
Bündners. They continued to celebrate New Year on 1st March and drove away the demons of the
old year with the ringing of bells, or taught those of the new year to fear. And that is still the case today.
The Calonda Mars parade in Savognin starts at 9.00 a.m. at the Barnagn schoolhouse and lasts about 2 hours. The
route for the children: Barnagn schoolhouse – Sur Tocf – Punt Crap – Auto Piz Mitgel – Spital – Veia Caross – Parking lot entrance Turnhalle Grava (below the Sala Grava).
Arrival at the village square around 9.45 a.m., where there will be delicious pastries and hot punch for everyone. Come join us.
