Overview of the Day
Every year on August 15, the Charavex mountain pasture transforms into a place of celebration and fellowship. On the schedule, rain or shine:
- 11:00 a.m.: Mass celebrated at the mountain pasture chapel
- Welcome aperitif
- Starting at 12:30 p.m.: A meal featuring cooked ham and potato salad, to be enjoyed alongside your picnic. Everyone is asked to bring their own tableware.
A Privileged Natural Setting
Located at an altitude of 1,445 meters, the Charavex alp is a true haven of peace above Ravoire/Martigny-Combe. Access is on foot only, which adds to the charm of the place and helps preserve its unspoiled character. The site, nestled in the heart of the Arpille–Vallée du Trient Forest Reserve, is home to two chalets, a shelter, and the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Chapel. The first records of the mountain pasture date back to 1342, and written sources mention forestry and pastoral activities as early as the 14th century, attesting to the mayen’s long history.
Access and Hiking
To reach the site by car, head toward Ravoire and then Chez les Pillet, where you should take the forest road to the marked parking lot. From there, a pleasant 45-minute walk through the forest (about 1.6 km with a 175-meter elevation gain) leads to the alpine pasture. The trail, marked on various hiking maps, offers an accessible and pleasant walk before you can fully enjoy the festival.
