L'Areuse–Emme–Sihl
Overview
Intro
A rattling goods train carrying Napf gravel, evidence of backbreaking work on the land at Burgrain, the shimmer of the Sempachersee lake, the early Romanesque church at Chilchbüehl, cherry trees alternating with dairy farming, pig breeding and farm dogs.
Description
The route starts in the centre of Huttwil and immediately begins with a climb to Ufhusen. From the neighbouring village of Hüswil, the cycle path leads off from the road and through a quiet landscape along the Luthern, or Luthere Bach stream, as it is known colloquially, to Zell. It continues for around 27 kilometres and rises at an altitude of 1,310 metres north of the Napf. The municipality of Zell in the canton of Lucerne is set in the hilly landscape of Napf.
At Gettnau, the route leaves the course of the Luthern and runs through fields and farmland to Burgrain, where the Swiss Agricultural Museum is located. The Burgrain Museum is a place of learning and experience where current issues on anything between the origin and future of agriculture are addressed and discussed.
The stage continues to Mauensee, a village with a protected area for migratory birds and a nature reserve. The castle of the same name stands on the small island. Shortly afterwards you reach Sursee, a small town on Lake Sempach with a long and eventful history. The current urban infrastructure was built towards the end of the 19th century.
Once you have reached a hill, you can slow down and enjoy the view of the lake and the mountains from above, while the bike path leads past cherry trees, vineyards and isolated farms as far as the next village. The Church of St. Martin in Kirchbühl was built on Roman remains between the 10th and 12th centuries.
The route continues through the rural area to the destination for this stage at Urswil. In the distance, you can see the queen of the mountains, the Rigi. Urswil is part of the municipality of Hochdorf, with origins dating back to 924.
