Intro
From the "Garden of Graubünden" around Malans, the route climbs steeply up the Vilan's forested slopes. Above the tree line on the steep southern slope, the view stretches far across the marvellous Prättigau. Beautiful forests, trails carved into the rock, rare alpine flora and bare rock enrich the ascent to the Schesaplana hut.
Description
Landquart lies at the entrance to the canton of Graubünden and connects the Rhine Valley with the Prättigau. The transport hub and industrial centre sits in a shallow valley surrounded by dominant mountain ranges.
Right at the beginning of the hike, you cross the canalised Landquart, which flows into the Rhine here. The river rises in the Silvretta region and flows through the entire Prättigau. Dead-straight paths lead across pastures to Malans. This area is also called the "Garden of Graubünden". The mixture of vineyards, orchards and fenced-in residential gardens creates a unique rural idyll.
Behind the small village, the trail continues on a varied route, quickly climbing about 600 metres in altitude. A path carved into the rock leads to the Fadärastein vantage point. The views extend across the shallow valley as far as Chur and Sargans. Slightly descending on the high plateau, the hike leads through the reed forest and to the village of Seewis.
Seewis is known for the numerous daffodils that thrive in the mild climate on the Vilan's weather-protected southern slopes. The trail now leads along the road uphill into the mountain forests. You can barely hear the Taschinas stream flowing through the gorge. Past a few sun-baked huts, the route crosses the Canällabach stream. Massive steel girders reinforce the trail in places, and a cable-stayed bridge has been added. In the Cani wetland, a wooden footbridge will keep your shoes dry.
Heading towards the source of the Canibach stream, you reach Alp Stürfis, which was inhabited by Walsers all year round from the 14th to the 17th century. As you climb to Keritobel, you leave the tree line behind you. Rare alpine flora blooms in the beautiful meadows, and rock-filled gullies run down from the Hornspitz.
Next up is an enjoyable hike along the steep southern slope. On the high-level trail from Sanalada, the far-reaching views over the Prättigau are spectacular. In summer, livestock guard dogs are used in this area. In order to pass them safely, it is important to keep calm and follow the signs with tips on how to behave. After a short descent and crossing the enchanted forest at Fräschascalas, the scenic path turns into a gravel road to the Schesaplana hut.
The Schesaplana hut lies in the alpine pastures below the impressive bastion of the Schesaplana's southern flank at an altitude of 1,908 metres. Above the hut rises the highest mountain in the Rätikon, the Schesaplana, at an altitude of 2,964 metres. The border with Austria runs along its summit.
