Rätikon-Panoramatrail
Overview
Intro
A varied snowshoe trail from Mount Stelserberg via Gafäll, with its astounding panorama of the Rätikon chain – known as the Graubünden Dolomites. The destination of this stage: the idyllic Walser village of St. Antönien.
Description
The postbus journey from Schiers via Fajauna to Stels is already an experience: the narrow road snakes up from the valley to reach the terminus near Mottis mountain lodge at 1,470 m.a.s.l. (Please note: the postbus service does not operate every hour). The snowshoe trail starts here: on Mount Stelserberg, it takes you past homely farmhouses to the Berghaus zum See mountain lodge (open in summer only). Here, if not before, you'll understand why this is called a panorama trail: you have constant vistas of the mighty rock walls of the Rätikon chain. The best views of the Kirchlispitzen, Drusenfluh and Sulzfluh – well known to rock climbers worldwide – can be seen from here. To your right: the frozen waters of Lake Stels.
The next section, as far as Gafäll, rises even more steeply: the high saddle accounts for most of the altitude gain on this route. You are now at the highest point of the tour. A view to the south also opens up on the broad ridge. You'd be well advised to take a break and admire the 360° panorama. Below you to the left, you can already make out Alp Valpun, the next destination. As the route crosses broad stretches of snowclad terrain, it becomes steeper at first before descending gently towards the tree line.
The snowshoe trail now meets the rolled winter hiking path from Pany. You must not leave the trail, because it leads into a wildlife conservation area after the tree line is reached. Stretches of forest alternate with clearings until the little ski lift at St. Antönien comes into view. Walk past old Walser houses into St. Antönien Platz for a well-deserved break at one of the welcoming restaurants. An hourly postbus service takes you back into the valley.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
