Intro

The treasures of the hill town of Romont beckon, the pastures becomes flatter, the views more impressive, the sweeping, contoured countryside challenges your legs, castles wave from rocky ridges and finally the tiny orange train rumbles along to Châtel-St-Denis.

Description

While in the little mediaeval town of Romont, it’s worth visiting the castle and its neighbouring museum as well as Abbaye de la Fille-Dieu, a Cistercian nunnery. One final glance back to the picturesque settlement with its town houses and patricians’ mansions and off you go, passing the villages of Billens, Hennens and Villaronon en route. The cycle path winds through a highly diverse landscape. Enjoy magnificent panoramic views at every turn as fields and meadows alternate with short stretches of forest. Equally impressive is the Neo-Gothic church of Saint-Maurice in Ursy, which was built in the mid-19th century and is famed for its magnificent stained-glass windows. You’re bound to notice the many small castles that accompany this stretch of your route, including a sizeable one atop a hill in Oron-le-Châtel. Oron Castle has been watching over the passage into the Broye valley for the past 900 years. These days, it is open to the public.

The stage continues through the Haute-Veveyse highlands, where the countryside remains just as peaceful as before and there are a great many animals to spot. Shortly before the end of the stage, the route takes you first to Lac Lussy, a lake located in the municipality of Châtel-St-Denis in a mountain valley around 820 metres above sea level. Part of a protected area of moorland of national importance, this alpine lake in the Canton of Fribourg is surrounded by marshland and reeds.

Now it’s just a short sprint to Châtel-St-Denis, the end point of both this stage and the whole route. The village enjoys a lovely location, nestled in an equally lovely hilly landscape. While in Châtel-St-Denis, you shouldn’t miss the three-aisled parish church of Saint-Denis, which was built in a Neo-Gothic style. Right next to it is the castle, which shares the same name as the village in which it stands.
