Intro
Take another look back at the harbour of Buochs before gliding through a richly-varied woodland and meadow landscape. Soon you cross the lake at its narrowest point between the oberen and unteren Nas towards Rotschuo bay. Gersau, until 1817 an independent republic, boasts cultural and culinary attractions.
Description
Buochs is a handsome village right by Lake Lucerne. The Buochserhorn mountain towers over it. The stretch between Buochs and Ennetbürgen, known as the “nautical mile” (Seemeile), offers numerous activities and water sports experiences right by the lake. Needless to say, one of them is canoeing. Tip: At sunrise, when the sun is finding its way through the mountains and reflecting in the lake, the colours along this stretch are spectacular.
Set off shortly before the Buochs boat harbour, shortly after which you will see the Buochs-Ennetbürgen lido. Then it’s not long until the village of the same name: Ennetbürgen is on the sunny south face of the Bürgenstock mountain. It has been inhabited since ancient times, but for many years the plain was just a boggy reedland in the delta of the Engelberger Aa. Only once the river had been dammed and redirected into the lake at Buochs did the settlement expand into the plain. Nowadays, vineyards, palm trees and lush vegetation bear testament to the mild, southern climate on the slopes of the Bürgenberg.
The journey along the “Nas” or “nose”, as this part of the Bürgenstock is known, leads to the Untere Nas (“lower nose”) natural forest reserve. In this area, you will encounter wonderful shoreline landscapes with lush meadows and forests. In 2010, the decision was made not to harvest wood from the forest for 50 years. Now it is being left to its own devices. Public picnic and bathing spots are the perfect place to stop and linger for a while.
After the Untere Nas, there comes a narrow section of the lake that extends for around 850 metres, leading to the Obere Nas (“upper nose”). This is where Switzerland’s redoubt strategy got underway during the Second World War. Bunkers were built into the two “Felsnasen” (“noses of rock”), which have remained as relics of the period. This is the narrowest and most heavily travelled stretch of Lake Lucerne (take note of the rights of way).
To your left is the lakeside municipality of Vitznau (canton of Lucerne). From there, you will have the option of taking the cog railway to Rigi Kulm. The view back towards the Bürgenstock mountain is impressive too, which almost looks like an island. Now you can already catch a glimpse of the Swiss Plateau. Did you know that the deepest part of the lake is just a stone’s throw from the “noses”, at 214 metres? Around a kilometre further, this stage comes to an end in Rotschuo with its hostel and little landing stage.
