Tips for spending three autumn days in Val d'Hérens A valley full of natural treasures
Intro
The Val d’Hérens stretches from the Rhône Valley near Sion, some kilometres south of the majestic Dent Blanche, which, at 4,358 metres, is the emblem of the valley. There’s so much to discover here in this idyllic valley! From the pitch-black Hérens cows – which are a real Swiss tradition – to the famous earth pyramids and the turquoise-blue mountain lakes.
Day 1
Euseigne: A guided tour to geological highlights
Together with a local hiking guide, we’re off on a one-day discovery tour through the idyllic Val d’Hérens. Guests will be amazed by two geological attractions: the earth pyramids of Euseigne, some of which are up to 15 metres tall, and the pale-blue Combioula Hot Springs, which offer up the perfect spot for a rest. Refreshed, hikers continue on to the agritourism hamlet of Ossona. Here, it’s well worth stopping off for a break in the hostel in Ossona (open from mid-April to the end of October) and trying out the delicious agricultural produce on offer. The spectacular suspension bridge takes you back to Luette, the final stop in your eventful day.
Day 2
Evolène: Round trip by e-bike with drinks among the Hérens cows
The e-bike tour starts in Evolène, the pretty Valais village with sun-kissed wooden houses. If you don’t have an e-bike of your own, you can easily hire one in the village itself.
You’ll be able to make it up to Alp Chemeuille without any great effort, before riding down single trails through the golden forest to the magical mountain lake, Lac d’Arbey. The crystal-clear waters here reflect the majestic 4,000m peak of the Dent-Blanche beautifully.
The perfect spot to take a break – in the small mountain café or at one of the picnic tables. Just above, you’ll see Hérens cows grazing. If you like, you can meet Florian, a young local, here. He and his family have been breeding Hérens cows for generations. Over a Valais platter and a glass of wine, he enjoys telling guests all about the cows and this tradition.
Day 3
Arolla: Hike to the Lac Bleu (“blue lake”)
Surrounded by mighty 3,000m peaks and golden-yellow larches, the turquoise-blue lake glitters in the bright autumn sunshine. Up here, at an altitude of 2,000 metres, the world always seems to be just as it should be. This idyllic location can be reached by foot in around 45 minutes from La Gouille, or in around an hour and a half if taking the somewhat easier – but longer – route.
Observant hikers will discover a wide range of flora on the slopes tinged with autumn colours and will often also be treated to glimpses of marmots and chamois. Taking a pair of binoculars and a camera will be well worthwhile, in any case!
