Intro

Hike in the canton Fribourg directly under the striking limestone peaks of the Gastlosen. The chairlift from Jaun takes you up to hiking trails at the foot of the rock range, which are considered the Swiss Dolomites.

The Gastlosen at a glance

The Gastlosen chain above Jaun consists of 61 limestone peaks and stretches over 15 kilometres in the Fribourg Pre-Alps. The steeply rising rock walls reach heights of over 300 meters. The Gastlosen-Express chairlift runs from Jaun to 1566 metres and shortens the ascent.

What to experience

Panoramic trail to the viewpoint (20 minutes)

From the mountain station of the chairlift, a wide path leads to the Panoramaplatz in 10 minutes. From there you have a direct view of the limestone peaks of the Gastlosen. On a clear day, the view extends as far as the Bernese Alps and the Gruyère region.

  • Good to know: The path is wide and also suitable for families with children.
  • Tip: Look for the Grandmother's Hole, a natural rock breakthrough in the mountain.

Circular hike around the Gastlosen (4 hours)

Start at the mountain station and hike via Soldatenhaus and Wolfs Ort once around the Gastlosen chain. At the highest point at 1921 meters, you stand on the cantonal border between Fribourg and Bern. The high-altitude trail takes you back to the starting point directly below the vertical rock faces.

  • Good to know: Surefootedness and sturdy shoes are required here.
  • Tip: At the Chalet du Soldat there are regional dishes and overnight accommodation.

Geological Trail of the Gastlosen (3 hours)

On the 8-kilometre-long circular route, 12 posts explain the formation of the limestone cliffs and their rock layers. You hike at the foot of the Gastlosen chain through alpine meadows and forest and learn how the rock formation was formed over millions of years. The starting point is at the Chalet Gross Rüggli car park.

  • Good to know: The path leads over mountain hiking trails with very stony sections.
  • Tip: You can download GPS data and a brochure about the path to your mobile phone in advance.
