Overview

Finally, vacation in the Engadin: High up in the Swiss mountains and close to St. Moritz and the two most famous peaks of the Engadin – Piz Palü and Piz Bernina – you stay at 1,822 meters. Up here lies a valley bathed in sunshine, made of lakes, mountains, and light – the Engadin. It's a world where small, large, and very large natural wonders form a paradisiacal backdrop. Close to the sky, the diverse nature with its untouched wilderness, dreamlike valleys, and majestic mountain landscapes come together in perfect harmony. South of St. Moritz, the world's most famous holiday resort with its "tingling champagne climate," rises a majestic mountain range – the Bernina with its highest peak, the Piz Bernina (4,049 m above sea level). By the way, it's the only four-thousander in the Eastern Alps. Hiking or cycling through blooming alpine meadows, past glacial lakes and beautiful alpine rose bushes, or simply "chilling" amidst the incomparable landscape is an indescribable experience. And all this comes with fresh mountain air included... Man, what more could you want? The Engadin is a vast playground for discoveries. Fun and a healthy dose of adrenaline guaranteed! An insider tip: Drive to Bernina Ospizio. Then hike to Alp Grüm. Enjoy the dreamlike view into the Valposchiavo there. Train rides over the Bernina Pass and through Graubünden: Which Alpine crossings could be considered the most spectacular, craziest, and unfortunately also the saddest? The craziest and saddest are those of Hannibal and Suvorov. Both Alpine crossings were military campaigns: Both had the same idea: to cross the Alps with their army (something the enemy didn't expect) and then launch a surprise attack. The most spectacular Alpine crossing of today is the train ride over the Bernina Pass. High up to the gleaming mountain peaks, deep down into the palm paradise of Italy. On one of the steepest railway tracks in the world, you travel to the Italian Tirano. Over the Bernina Pass, the train – unique in Europe – climbs even up to 2,253 meters above sea level. In Poschiavo, you still have time to stroll before the conductor calls for departure again. Since the journey was so beautiful, experience it once more on the return trip. Man, how time flies, soon it's "Prossima Fermata" – "Next Stop" – "Nächster Halt" Alp Grüm. With a magnificent view over the Valposchiavo, you are rewarded once more at the end of the day. The icing on the cake is the picturesque sunset. But don't miss the last train because of too much enjoyment, otherwise... Chur in the heart of the Rhine Valley: One of the longest rivers in Europe – the Rhine – has its source in the Alps. And wherever there was water, people settled. Thus, over 5,000 years ago, the oldest city in Switzerland was founded. But where does the Rhine get its name? It is believed to derive from the Celtic word "Rinnen" or the Old High German word "Rinan." The meaning: The water "runs" from the many glaciers and various sources. But even more mysterious is how peoples far from the sources in the Alps and the river mouths at the North Sea agreed on the same name. Back in Chur, the Bishop's Court with the late Romanesque cathedral of St. Mary's Assumption towers high above the – now car-free – old town. This significant episcopal city on the Rhine has much to tell. Centuries have shaped the place and left their mark.
