Great Bigerhorn: highest hiking summit

Since 2024, the route to the Gross Bigerhorn has been continuously marked with white-red-white markings. No ropes, ice axes, or crampons are needed—just good shoes and a bit of stamina. Two nights at the Bordier Hut mean: you acclimate to the altitude at ease, summit with a light pack, and enjoy the sunset and sunrise over the Nadelgrat twice from the front row. **Day 1: From Gasenried to the Bordier Hut** After the gear check, you hike through larch forests, across the old glacier plain, and over the moraines up to the hut at 2,886 meters. Around five hours and 1,350 meters of elevation gain, with breaks as needed. Up top: shoes off, tea in hand, soak in the view. **Day 2: Summit Day** We start at first light. Crossing the saddle between Klein and Gross Bigerhorn and the west ridge, we reach the summit cross in about two and a half hours—last stretch over boulders and scree. All around stand the Dom, Weisshorn, and the four-thousanders of the Nadelgrat. By early afternoon, we’re back on the hut terrace. If you still have energy in the evening, you can catch the sunset from the Klein Bigerhorn as a bonus. **Day 3: Back to Gasenried** A leisurely breakfast, then a three-and-a-half-hour descent with rested legs. By midday, we’re back in the village—where celebrating the summit is optional but highly recommended. **Requirements** Challenging alpine hike (T3+) with scree, boulder fields, a few exposed spots, and short ladders. Your hands may help with balance now and then, but no climbing is required. If you handle day hikes with around 1,200 meters of elevation gain well and still feel like walking the next day, you’re ready. Sure-footedness is a must. **Small Group, Relaxed Pace** Three to six participants, pace set by the group—not the fastest. Many come alone, and by dinner at the long hut table, everyone knows each other. In uncertain conditions, we may opt for the Klein Bigerhorn (3,182 m). No summit obligation. **Private or Two-Day Option?** The tour is also available privately for up to four people and as a sporty two-day option for well-trained hikers.
