Intro

Time for a wonderful day trip to the heart of Switzerland? Then it’s off to Lake Lucerne in the “cradle of Switzerland” adventure region in the south. Here you can discover the myth of how Switzerland was founded, walk the famous Swiss Path and enjoy what is probably one of the most beautiful views in Switzerland high above Seelisberg.

The tour starts in Brunnen, a pretty little vacation spot on the shores of Lake Lucerne. The journey continues by liner, which takes just over ten minutes to reach the Rütli landing point. From here, you’ll hike up a steep but short footpath to the historic and idyllic Rütliwiese – the birthplace of the Swiss Confederation. The Rütlischwur, the legendary oath, is said to have taken place in 1291 on the Rütli meadow with representatives from the original cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. You can enjoy a picnic at this historically significant site if you like, or why not indulge in culinary delights at Restaurant Rütlihaus? They serve fresh, local and traditional dishes. Once you have been fortified, the journey can continue. The hike along the Swiss Path (towards Bauen) takes just over an hour to reach Marienhöhe, a wonderful lookout, complete with fire pit. The view from up here of the Rütli, Lake Uri and the Mythen mountains is unparalleled. So much so in fact that a large mural by the Geneva painter Charles Giron of this very view has been hanging in the Swiss National Assembly Hall since 1902. And if you want to go even higher up into the mountains, you can hike a good kilometre further along the Swiss Path to the valley station of the small, fully automatic Seelisberg-Alp Weid cableway. Sitting at almost 1,300 metres up, a wonderful panorama will open up before you: lush green pastures, dark-green forests, imposing mountain peaks and, in the background, the turquoise waters of Lake Uri, glistening in the sun. If you stop off in the Swiss mountain hut on Alp Weid, not only can you enjoy this picture-perfect part of Switzerland for longer, but you can also sample delicious seasonal and local produce.

The cableway will then take you back down to Seelisberg, and from here it is a good half-hour walk to the Treib-Seelisberg railway. The historic funicular will then take you to Treib and the boat landing point of the same name. In summer, the railway runs approximately every 20 minutes (boat connections are guaranteed in the mornings and evenings) and in winter, approximately every hour, with direct connections to and from the boat in Treib. Back in Brunnen, you can take a comfortable seat on the lakeside promenade and round off the impressive day by watching the sun set.
