A place no animal lover should miss, the natural history museum and zoo at La Chaux-de-Fonds have been united under the name MUZOO since 2022.
The MUZOO opened in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the centre of Switzerland’s watchmaking industry, at the end of 2022. This merger of the natural history museum and the zoo in the Bois du Petit-Château is entirely dedicated to the world of animals. A memorable experience for young and old alike.
This free zoo offers the chance to observe and in some cases even pet a wide variety of exciting animal species, from donkeys and otters to lynx – prepare to be amazed! The vivarium section of the museum is home to snakes, lizards and other extraordinary creatures, now in larger, brighter terrariums since the reopening. The newly revamped exhibition at the natural history museum is located in a former theatre. A large array of exotic animals is impressively displayed on the former stage. Head to the theatre balconies to discover other fascinating animals. In the former auditorium, visitors can now learn more about topics such as biodiversity and ecosystems, raising awareness in an interactive way. Temporary exhibitions round off the experience.
The animal care centre that is part of the MUZOO takes in wild animals that are injured, sick, orphaned or otherwise in need. These are raised for eventual release back into the wild. A workshop showing and explaining the rescue centre is offered specifically for children. This is followed by a demonstration and chance to have a go at wildlife care on injured toy animals. An unforgettable experience for young animal lovers.
The cafeteria spoils its guests with culinary delights, while the zoo playground is the perfect place for children to let off steam. The cafeteria places great emphasis on locally produced products and has a terrace.
Getting there: La Chaux-de-Fonds can be reached by train. From the railway station, take bus no. 304 towards Hôpital or no. 310 towards Sombaille, getting off at the stop “Bois du Petit-Château”. The MUZOO is a 15-minute walk from the railway station. Parking is available in the nearby multi-storey car parks: Métropole-Centre (15 minutes’ walk) and Espacité (10 minutes’ walk).
The MUZOO is also easily reached by tourist train from La Chaux-de-Fonds. The combined ticket includes the train and entrance to the MUZOO.
