Intro

The Collection de l’Art Brut showcases a one-of-a-kind collection of “outsider art”, produced by self-taught social outcasts, such as psychiatric hospital patients and prisoners.

Jean Dubuffet was the first to recognise the artistic quality of work produced spontaneously by social outcasts – self-taught artists he encountered in psychiatric hospitals, prisons and elsewhere. He called their work Art Brut, and gathered countless examples – which in 1971 he donated to the city of Lausanne. Its Collection de l'Art Brut has since become known as the international focus for artistic communication from another world.
