Porträt eines Landes

Unter dem Titel «Iran ­– Porträt eines Landes» zeigt das Museum Rietberg eine Ausstellung, die dem Fotografen Antoin Sevruguin (1851–1933) gewidmet ist. Als Sohn armenischer Eltern im Iran geboren und im georgischen Tiflis aufgewachsen, arbeitete er später als Berufsfotograf in Teheran – und verstand sich als Iraner. Dennoch gilt er heute, der berühmteste frühe Fotograf in Iran, den meisten Fachleuten in und ausserhalb des Irans als «Ausländer».

Er fotografierte, so die Meinung, Land und Leute mit einem «fremden», einem «orientalistischen» Blick. Heisst das, dass Sevruguin nur «europäische» Bilderschuf? Ist es am Ende undenkbar, dass ein «Secondo» wie er einen «indigenen», einen «iranischen» Blick besass? Diese Fragen – die viel mit Vorurteilen und Kategorisierungen zu tun haben und heute aktueller sind denn je – stehen im Zentrum dieses «Porträts». Die Ausstellung zeigt 63 Fotografien aus dem Bestand des Museums Rietberg und wird von einer Broschüre in Deutsch, Französisch und Englisch begleitet.
