Intro

The rugged cliffs, just a few meters apart, show the force behind the River Linth as it found its course here.

The 1.4-kilometre Linth Gorge enjoys an impressive natural setting in Glarnerland. The River Linth insistently forces its way between steep rock faces. The gorge begins at the confluence of two streams, the Sand and the Limmern, at 1,050 metres above sea level and ends in Tierfehd at 810 metres up. For an action-packed, unforgettable way to experience nature, you could try the ascent with a mountain guide with rappelling and climbing offered as part of the package.

If you prefer a more leisurely pace, take the 30-minute trail from Tierfehd/Linthal to the well-known Panten Bridge. Just before the tunnel, a path leads down to the viewing platform. Here you can enjoy a view of the imposing gorge and the bridge from a lofty height. Built in 1854, the Panten Bridge is a double bridge, with the newer bridge placed on top of the older one. It is a testament to the skills of earlier engineers and is the only crossing over the Linth Gorge on the way to the Kisten and Sand Pass. The bridge was once an important access route to the canton of Graubünden.

Getting there: Travel by car or train to Linthal.
