Intro
After undergoing careful restoration work, the historic Castello San Materno – located at the entrance to Ascona – has housed the art collection of the Kurt and Barbara Alten Cultural Foundation since 2014
The permanent exhibition features German Impressionist and Expressionist works by artists from the Worpswede artists’ colony. Included among them are paintings by Paula Modersohn-Becker, Otto Modersohn, Hans am Ende, Fritz Overbeck, Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth, joined by works by the Die Brücke and Der Blauer Reiter groups of artists such as Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Hermann Max Pechstein and Alexej von Jawlensky. Artists August Macke, Emil Nolde and Christian Rohlfs are represented by works in watercolours. A special exhibition has been held each year during the summer months since 2016.
