Description
The second stage of the Three-Country Hiking Trail truly lives up to its name. You have barely set out from the starting point of Riehen, the largest cemetery in Switzerland, and you are already in the area bordering Germany. First of all, a path takes you up 200 metres. You can enjoy splendid views of the city. You then hike further uphill on gravel paths to St. Chrischona. The church of the same name is located on the summit of Basel’s local mountain. Protestant theology has been studied here since 1840. St. Chrischona is the highest point in the canton of Basel-Stadt. Much more impressive than the height of the mountain at 510 metres is the 250-metre-high television tower, the highest free-standing building in Switzerland.
After a while you reach the customs. However, you do not yet cross the border into Germany here, but only after you have traversed the Wiese river and completed the climb through the vineyards of Obertüllingen. After this, you pass through the Markgräfler wine-growing region, enjoying natural landscapes, which almost make you forget you are close to the city. Gravel roads alternate with surfaced ones.
You then arrive at Ötlingen, one of the most attractive villages in Markgräflerland. Surrounded by vines, the centre of Ötlingen is idyllic, with listed historical buildings. Ötlingen also describes itself as an ART village. Since 2007, many artists have been creating works adapted to the image of the village. Some of these adorn the houses and front gardens, forming an open-air gallery.
Half an hour later, you reach the destination for this stage in Haltingen, which is a district of Weil am Rhein. With around 30,000 residents, Weil am Rhein is a town in southern Baden, and is located directly in the border triangle between Germany, France and Switzerland. The town is officially permitted to carry the title of three-countries town. There is also something to interest enthusiasts of design and architecture with the Vitra Design Museum.
