Schneeschuhtrail Bischofalp
Overview
Intro
A solitary trek through the winter paradise of Elm, even with winter sports facilities so close at hand? Yes – if you follow the Bischofalp snowshoe trail! Just above the tree line, this easily navigable trail gives you direct views of the circle of 3,000-meter peaks around Elm and the famous Martinsloch rock window.
Description
Did you know that there's an Atlas near the Martinsloch rock window? Of course, it's not the range of mountains in Morocco, but one of the mountains in the remarkable circle of 3,000-meter peaks around Elm. From the trail, you always have direct views of the jagged Tschingelhörner chain and the Piz Segnes or Vorab peaks.
To reach the starting point, take the Elm-Ämpächli gondola and walk along the prepared winter hiking path. It can also be followed without snowshoes. A comfortable walk of rather more than half an hour brings you to the Bischofalp Mountain Hotel. Guests here can enjoy culinary treats on the panorama terrace as they gaze at the stunning view. The Mountain Hotel is located directly on the ski run. Vreni Schneider, World and Olympic champion and multiple winner of the World Cup, began her skiing career on these slopes long ago.
You should don your snowshoes now, if not before: the trail leads into Europe's oldest wildlife conservation area, the Freiberg Kärpf, taking you through open and sunny terrain to the wildlife observatory. Then you pass the Matthüttli hut and continue to the haymaking settlement of Hengstboden. The haylofts, known here as "Ghaltigen", are quaint timber huts: in the 19th century, the Elm farmers used to stay overnight in them when they were transporting winter hay for their cattle. After making your way back to the mountain station of the cableway, the choice is yours: a stately ride in a gondola, or breathtaking descent into the valley on a toboggan?
