The Foroglio waterfall at a glance

The Foroglio waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in Ticino. It is located in the Val Bavona, a side valley of the Maggia Valley. The Calnègia mountain stream feeds the waterfall, which plunges 110 metres into the depths directly behind the historic stone village of Foroglio. The village, with its 15th-century chapel, is inhabited from April to October.

What to experience

Walk to Foroglio Waterfall (15-20 minutes)

From the Foroglio car park, a short path leads through the village directly to the waterfall. After a few minutes, you'll be standing in front of the 110-meter-high wall of water and feeling the cool spray on your skin. In summer, natural stream pools at the foot of the waterfall invite you to Baden.

  • Good to know: Especially at high water levels, Baden is dangerous.
  • Tip: At the waterfall, a swing from Swing the World awaits.

Hike Foroglio–Calnègia–Foroglio (3–4 hours)

From Foroglio, steep stone stairs lead up to the upper edge of the waterfall. At the hamlet of Puntíd you cross a historic stone arch bridge. The path follows the Calnègia stream through the forest to the alpine hamlet of Calnègia. Along the way you will find crystal clear stream pools for Baden and stone houses under huge boulders.

  • Good to know: Surefootedness and sturdy shoes are a prerequisite.
  • Tip: Prepare well, because there is no mobile network in Val Calnègia.

Valley hike Sonlerto–Foroglio–Bignasco (2.5 hours)

This family-friendly hike leads down the valley through the Val Bavona. You will start in Sonlerto and walk past historic hamlets with stone houses that stand between huge boulders. In Foroglio, stop at the waterfall before continuing to Bignasco.

  • Good to know: The valley hike is an easy route that is well suited for families.
  • Tip: Take the PostBus to Sonlerto, walk back to Bignasco.
