Intro

Den Kern der Ausstellung bilden Beispiele aus katholischen Kirchgemeinden im Thurgau in verschiedenen Formen und aus verschiedenen Epochen.

Reliquien sind wörtlich «Überreste» von Heiligen, oder auch Gegenstände, mit denen sie in Kontakt gekommen sind. Sie spielen in der christlichen Kirche eine bedeutende Rolle, insbesondere seit dem Aufstieg des Christentums zur Staatsreligion im Römischen Reich des 4. Jahrhunderts. Der Kern des Reliquienkults waren die Heilserwartungen, die man damit verband: Die Heiligen bewirken durch die Präsenz ihrer Überreste Wunder. Ein wesentlicher Aspekt des Umgangs mit Reliquien ist ihre Präsentation, die Ausdruck ihrer Wertschätzung und ihres Stellenwerts ist. Reich geschmückte Behältnisse (Reliquiare), oft aus Edelmetall gefertigt, unterstreichen die Bedeutung des Inhalts. Dabei hat sich im Verlauf der Zeit eine enorme Vielfalt dieser Präsentationsformen entwickelt. Den Kern der Ausstellung bilden Beispiele aus katholischen Kirchgemeinden im Thurgau in verschiedenen Formen und aus verschiedenen Epochen.

Die Reliquien im engsten kirchlichen Sinne werden durch «profane» Reliquien ergänzt, beispielsweise durch Andenken an verstorbene Angehörige, deren Haar kunstvoll zu Ornamenten und Blumen geflochten eine Fotografie umranken, oder durch andere pietätvoll verwahrte Erinnerungsstücke.
