Boat trips in the Three-Lakes Region at a glance
The Three-Lakes Region in the cantons of Bern, Fribourg and Neuchâtel forms the largest contiguous lake district in Switzerland. The Zihl and Broye Canal connect Lake Biel, Neuchâtel and Murten. The Bielersee-Schifffahrts-Gesellschaft (BSG) and the LNM jointly serve the route network.
What to experience
Three Lakes Cruise from Murten to Biel/Bienne (4–5 hours)
From Murten you drive through the Broye Canal into Lake Neuchâtel and on through the Zihl Canal into Lake Biel. On the way, you will pass vineyards, Le Landeron and La Neuveville before the ship stops at the St. Petersinsel and later reached Biel/Bienne. The route is one of the longest navigable waterways in Switzerland.
- Good to know: From Biel/Bienne you can continue the journey to Solothurn.
- Tip: In Biel/Bienne, a walk through the medieval old town is worthwhile.
Excursion to St. Peter's Island (2–3 hours)
The St. Petersinsel is located in the middle of Lake Biel in the canton of Bern and can be reached by boat from Biel/Bienne. On the way you will pass reeds, sandy beaches and vineyards. From the St. Petersinsel Nord, a short walk leads you to the monastery restaurant, where regional dishes and local wines await you.
- Good to know: Walk along the 4-kilometer path along the peninsula to Erlach.
- Tip: In the former monastery, you can visit Jean-Jacques Rousseau's room.
Ride on the steamboat "Neuchâtel"
The DS "Neuchâtel" from 1912 is the last surviving semi-saloon paddle steamer in Switzerland and today sails again on Lake Neuchâtel. Accompanied by the beat of the paddle wheels, you will pass by the banks of the cantons of Neuchâtel and Vaud. Thanks to its lowerable chimney, the Belle Époque ship also sails on Lake Murten and Lake Biel.
