Intro
From the Residence of the Principality of Liechtenstein, the romantic Grüscha Way leads through the Princely Forest to the panoramic Walser high-altitude village of Triesenberg and then via the hamlet of Rotaboda back to Vaduz.
Description
Malbun is the most famous holiday resort in the Principality of Liechtenstein. Although the mountain village is small and informal, it offers a large network of hiking trails in unspoilt nature. The Schönberg route starts at the car park at the entrance to the village. At the chapel, the easy Sassweg trail branches off towards Alp Sass. From here, the path climbs through the forest to Sassförkle, the watershed between the alps of Sass and Guschg.
From Sassförkle, a more demanding path leads uphill through some pastures and further on along the flank of the Stachlerkopf in many narrow bends. The "Drei Kapuziner" are rocky heads which look just like three monks when viewed from Alp Guschg. A partly secured mountain trail leads from here to the south-western ridge of the Schönberg, which is dotted with flowers. At the summit, a fantastic view of the Liechtenstein mountains opens up, over the Rätikon region in the southeast and across the Rhine valley some 1600 metres below to the Alvier group, the Churfirsten and the Säntis.
The return route passes through Bärgi. A narrow path leads downwards through a rich alpine flora with beautiful alpine roses. From there, the trail continues in gentle ups and downs and mostly in the forest to Sass Stall (1650 m a.s.l.). There are deep sinkholes nearby. These occur when rocks, such as the gypsum found here, are attacked by circulating water and dissolved in places. The cavities thus created collapse and lead to large drops at the surface of the terrain. The route then leads back to Malbun along the Sassweg.
