Intro

Are you prone to vertigo? Hopefully not. This loop tour takes you through larch forests and leads to an impressive record-breaking structure: the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the Alps. It measures 494 metres, and at the highest point you find yourself 85 metres above the Grabengufer.

Description

Randa is located between Visp and Zermatt which is nine kilometres away. The highest point in the municipality is also the highest peak situated entirely in Switzerland: the Dom at 4545 metres. This hike leads to dizzying heights as well. It starts at the Randa train station and follows the Domhüttenweg. Before you reach the suspension bridge, you have the option of making a detour to the Europe mountain hut. As the name suggests, it is located on the Europe trail and thus also on the Monte Rosa tour.

The highlight of the described route is the "Charles Kuonen" suspension bridge. It was opened in 2017 as a replacement for the Europe bridge which was damaged by a rock fall in the summer of 2010, only two months after its completion. In the meantime, one had to descend 500 metres into the valley, which is why the Europe trail was less frequented. All the more spectacular is the construction which now closes the gap in the hiking trail between Grächen and Zermatt. At 494 metres, it is considered the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the Alps. The crossing takes just under ten minutes. At the highest point, the pedestrians hover 85 metres above the Grabengufer – therefore, a head for heights is a prerequisite for this hike. The transparent bridge construction made of steel cables and wire grids always allows a view into the depths. In the middle, a splendid view of the Weisshorn and the entire mountain world opens up. Chamois and golden eagles are also regularly observed here.

The direct route leads through larch forests to the vantage point on the Hohtschugga with its wooden cross of nine metres. The view of the mountain range opposite and down into the valley is magnificent. The area is also ideal for a picnic. You then descend through the forest back to Randa and the starting point.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
