Valais Alpine Bike
Overview
Intro
From Eischoll into the wild Lötschental valley: This stage combines long enduro descents, spectacular mountain paths, narrow trails and sunny slopes to create an impressive crossing of the Rhone Valley – with constant views of the 4,000-metre Valais peaks.
Description
From Brig, take the train to Raron and then the cable car up to Eischoll. The village, which has an old centre and typical Valais-style houses, is located on a sunny terrace above the Rhone Valley. The route leads downwards on broad Alpine roads, past meadows and pastures, to the ski resort of Eischoll. Wooden huts dot the landscape on the Senggalp, where Hérens cows graze in the summer. The panoramic view stretches across the Bietschhorn and Breithorn to the peaks of the Bernese Alps.
The start of the descent through the Färichwald forest is flowy. Trails and narrow forest paths alternate with clearings and sunny slopes. The single trail becomes steeper and more technically challenging in the lower part, with tight curves and stony passages. The approximately 1,000 metres of elevation of enduro descent are among the highlights of this stage.
From Gampel, you take the cable car back up to the mountain village of Jeizinen. It lies on the southern Valais slopes and features sunburnt wooden houses and a unique view of the 4,000-metre Valais peaks. You then travel on surfaced roads until the terrain changes at Stafel: A narrow trail winds along the slope with a clear view into the Lötschental valley and of the glacier in the valley basin. The path seems like a high-altitude Alpine promenade.
Oberi Meiggu marks your transfer into the Lötschental valley. It’s worth stopping to take a look inside the small wooden chapel on the Faldumalp. From here, the path winds through the Alpine landscape at spectacular altitude. It crosses steep traverses, rock ledges, mountain streams and ravines. You reach your destination for this stage on the Lauchernalp.
