Valle Morobbia Bike
Overview
Intro
The ascent leads into the characteristic Morobbia valley. The route follows the historic Giubiasco-Carena bike race. After Carmena you branch off onto a single trail. In the first part of the tour, the view over the Magadino plain is magnificent; on the descent, the UNESCO castles of Bellinzona come into view.
Description
The starting point of the mountain bike tour is Giubiasco, a district in the south of the municipality of Bellinzona. From the train station, you ride to the Piazza Grande, one of the largest squares in the canton. The beautiful green area is lined with sculptures by contemporary artists. From here, the cantonal road climbs up into the Morobbia valley which is crossed by the river of the same name and runs all the way up to the San Jorio pass. The first part of the tour follows the popular Giubiasco-Carena bike racing route. Numerous cantonal and national races have been held here.
As you pedal past the vineyard-clad hills, your gaze wanders to the mountains and across the Magadino plain to Lake Maggiore. In Carmera, you leave the paved road. The single trail towards the Paudo mountains winds through the chestnut grove "il Meriggio" which was redeveloped in 2005. Chestnuts are typical for the lower part of the valley with its mild climate, higher up, it becomes more alpine. On this section, the mountain bike has to be pushed a few times. Between Monti di Paudo and Monti di Ravecchia, there is another stretch on asphalt.
You then begin the descent towards Bellinzona during which you can admire the three medieval castles that have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. You pass two of them directly. A steep mule track zigzags down towards the Castello di Sasso Corbaro, perched on a rocky outcrop. The path is in excellent condition, but in rainy weather there is a risk of slipping, and care should be taken. From the Castello di Montebello, you will reach the Bellinzona train station in a short time.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
