Thomas Mann auf einer Reise durch Nachkriegsdeutschland
In the summer of 1949, Thomas Mann, who had been living in exile in the US, returned to his devastated homeland for the first time since the Second World War. He was accompanied by his strong-willed daughter, Erika Mann. Their journey took them from American-controlled Frankfurt am Main, across the zone border, to Soviet-administered Weimar. In both places, Mann is due to receive the Goethe Prize and deliver speeches. Whilst the two political systems attempt to exploit the famous author for their own political ends, the journey is overshadowed by a grave family tragedy.
