Introducción
The Leonkoro Quartet – named after the "Lionheart" – makes its Gstaad debut with two masterpieces: Mendelssohn's moving last quartet and Beethoven's Op. 131, which even left Schubert in awe.
«Leonkoro» – that means «Lionheart» in Esperanto. A name that could hardly suit the young string quartet, founded in Berlin in 2019, any better. At the same time, it reminds one of Astrid Lindgren's children’s book The Brothers Lionheart – a beautiful parallel, as this ensemble also features two brothers playing side by side: Jonathan and Lukas Schwarz.
For their debut at the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, the ensemble has brought along two masterpieces from the repertoire: Mendelssohn's touching last string quartet – a musical «Requiem for Fanny» – and Beethoven's Opus 131, the work about which Schubert is said to have reverently remarked: «After this – what else is there left to write?»
