Teniky

Introducción
A monumental site from the year 1000 in Madagascar
The Isalo Massif is located in southern Madagascar, 200 km from the coast. It is a mountainous range with spectacular terrain but one that is not well-suited for human habitation. The Teniky site occupies a cirque of cliffs 400 m in diameter. At the foot of the cliffs, enormous terraces, structures built of hewn stone blocks, and cave dwellings with colonnades have been constructed. This architectural complex is unparalleled in Madagascar and throughout Africa. Since 2021, archaeological research on this site has been revived by a team of Swiss and Malagasy researchers. The main period of occupation is dated to the 11th century CE, based on radiocarbon dating and archaeological artifacts consisting of ceramics imported from China and the Persian Gulf. The new archaeological data shed new light on the settlement history of Madagascar.
