Inleiding
The exhibition “ESTIVAGES. The Alpine Pasture Season in Switzerland,” featuring photographs by Romano P. Riedo, will be on view at the Valais Media Library – Martigny from June 26 to August 29, 2026.
Presented at the Valais Media Library in Martigny, this exhibition highlights the alpine economy, a cornerstone of the alpine cultural landscape and an essential component of Swiss agriculture. Utilizing nearly one-third of the country’s agricultural land, it also plays a major role in preserving biodiversity, maintaining the landscape, and land use. In 2023, this practice was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Moving beyond traditional representations, the exhibition invites visitors to take a nuanced look at this reality. In particular, it highlights the crucial contribution of women and seasonal workers—often overlooked—and draws attention to current challenges linked to social change and climate change.
Through the lens of photographer Romano Riedo, a connoisseur of this world, the public discovers a series of black-and-white images taken throughout Switzerland. Brought together in a display designed for the “Dans l’Objectif” space, these photographs offer a sensory immersion into a world that is both fascinating and fragile, now facing profound transformations.
