Inleiding
A section focusing on the Stanserhorn, which you almost circle. The Winkelried Memorial is found in Stans. The Swiss hero reputedly threw himself onto the enemies’ pikes at the Battle of Sempach in 1386 to open up a breach for the confederates.
Beschrijving
Flüeli-Ranft belongs to the municipality of Sachseln and is located at 728 m. a. s. l. It is the home of Niklaus von Flüe, the hermit Brother Klaus, who also made a name for himself as a politician, mystic and visionary. He lived in this hamlet as a hermit between 1467 and 87, and many pilgrims still travel here today. On the route up to shortly before Stans, information boards provide hikers with an insight into his work and life. Right at the beginning, the trail descends to the Grosse Melchaa in the Ranft gorge. After crossing the river, stairs lead up to the chapel of St. Niklausen. Continuing past St. Niklausen and Bethanien, the lake of Sarnen and the Brienzer Rothorn join the view of Mount Pilatus.
Paved roads and gravel paths alternate, and some sections follow trails or run through the forest. By the time you pass St. Jakob a little above, you have been on the road for about three hours. Another short stretch and the destination of Stans is already in sight. A little later you can see the Bürgenstock and a small part of lake Lucerne.
Crossing lush meadows, you pass the more than 100-year-old funicular railway, which exudes nostalgic flair, especially further down at the valley station. It takes passengers up the Stanserhorn to the modern convertible cable car at the Kälti middle station. After about 4.5 hours, the rather short hike ends in the Nidwalden capital of Stans at its landmark, a monument depicting the sacrificial death of Arnold von Winkelried in the Battle of Sempach around 1386. It was carved in Carrara marble by the Basel sculptor Ferdinand Schlöth in 1865.

Win op voorhand inlichtingen in bij de plaatselijke informatiedienst over de toestand van het traject en de weersomstandigheden. Afhankelijk van het seizoen en de weersomstandigheden kan de route gesloten of onderbroken zijn.
