Cortège 2026
Overview
Intro
On Monday afternoon, February 15, 27, and on Wednesday afternoon, February 17, 27, the Cortège (parade) will take place in downtown Basel—in both Greater and Lesser Basel—between 1:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
The parade, known as the “Cortège” in Basel, takes place every Monday and Wednesday afternoon along two routes that run in opposite directions (the inner and outer routes). It is the centerpiece of Basel’s Sujetfasnacht. Around 11,000 carnival participants present their themes, which are designed from scratch every year. The approximately 500 groups—including cliques, Waggiswagen, Guggemusik bands, Grüppli, and others—march on both afternoons at one of the three designated departure times (1:30 p.m. / 2:10 p.m. / 2:50 p.m.) from their assigned starting points (see route map). The procession is a wonderful mix of drum and piccolo sounds, strutting Guggen, intriguing Waggis, and whirling Räppli. The badge serves as your admission ticket, so wearing it is a matter of honor.
