ECHOES

15.04.2026 - 14.04.2027ECHOES - Sylvain Croci-TortiOn the initiative of Le Manoir and with the support of the City of Martigny, Valais artist Sylvain Croci-Torti invests public space with a series of monochrome flags installed on Avenue de la Gare and on the path leading to Château de la Bâtiaz.A visual arts graduate of the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL) and winner of the 2016 Swiss Art Awards, Sylvain Croci-Torti is one of Switzerland's leading exponents of abstraction and monochrome. His relationship with painting is simple and direct, and he sees it as the act of depositing color on a canvas. He paints by invariably following his protocol: applying a single color to a canvas, often a very large one, with a tool that leaves the trace of its ample movement. In the words of the minimalist painter Niele Toroni, who had a profound influence on him, he likes to "do everything stupidly and without history(s)", to repeat the same gesture and realize that the imprint is never the same. For this project of flags in the town of Martigny, Croci-Torti proposes six monochromes, for which he has defined a protocol within his protocol. Using a Pantonier (a referenced color chart), he first chose color 123, a warm yellow, as a starting point - 1, 2, 3. From there, he selected shades by leaps and bounds, with mathematical logic as the rule of the game: 223 - a pink, 323 - a green, then less clear-cut colors, 423, 523 and 623. The flags printed with these straightforward flat tints of color reveal the trace of gesture and gaps. Here, the canvas is unfurled in the wind, still monumental but free of the stretcher and architectural constraints, and inscribed in the landscape like the banner of a formal and free radicalism.
