ELIAS - Oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn
Overview
Intro
At the opening of the 5th Lucerne International Organ Festival, "Elijah" op. 70 for organ, orchestra and choir will be performed, providing a brilliant prelude to the anniversary event.
With the oratorio Elijah, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy created one of the most impressive sacred works of the 19th century. First performed in Birmingham in 1846, it tells the dramatic story of the prophet Elijah - full of conflict, miracles and visionary power.
In gripping choruses, touching arias and luminous orchestral color, Mendelssohn combines baroque tradition in the spirit of Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel with romantic depth of expression - a work of stirring intensity and timeless radiance.
