Intro

The lecture shows how Japanese craftsmanship supports social sustainability through knowledge transfer, durable materials, and a culture of repair.

[ Overview ]

This lecture by Mr. TOKUNAGA Yuki, Associated Researcher of RCAST, University of Tokyo, examines how Japanese craftsmanship, material culture, and the intergenerational transmission of skills contribute to social sustainability. Focusing on practices such as woodworking, textiles, and lacquerware, it highlights how knowledge is passed down through hands-on experience and close community ties. By exploring traditions that emphasize durability, repair and respect for natural materials, the talk presents cultural continuity as a key element of sustainable futures.
