La Pêche miraculeuse
Masterwork of the Musée d’art et d’histoire’s collections, Konrad Witz’s 1444 altarpiece is a landmark in the history of painting. One of its two surviving panels, the Miraculous draft of fishes, is the oldest representation in western art of a topographically faithful landscape, featuring the Geneva harbour, the pointed Môle and the permanent snow of the Mont-Blanc. Its survival through the centuries is also a miracle, for this altarpiece, originally placed above the high altar in Saint Peter’s cathedral, has partly escaped the Protestant iconoclasm which fell upon the city in 1535.
