Description

You start the circular route at La Chia, the lowest mountain used for activities in La Gruyère, with a ski tow operated by volunteers. Heading off towards the east, you will see first Bulle, the main administrative centre for the district of La Gruyère, the Dent de Broc, the chain of Vanils and finally the Château de Gruyères, the second most-visited chateau in Switzerland after Chillon, which has been open to the public since 1938. The route leads through forests and pastures, with views from the clearings to the typical mountain chalets of La Gruyère, with names that are either poetic or derived from the local patois – for example, La Grosse Oubèca, Pré de la Joux Dessus or La Savarisa.

The trail continues across the snow-covered pasture of L'Autin to the beautiful Chapelle des Clés. Always in plain view: the imposing Moléson, a landmark of the Fribourg Pre-Alps. The trail continues up to the pretty hamlet of In Maulatrê and past the Chalet of Les Maulatreys, a charming alpine hut dating from 1736 with old wooden planks and dry-stone walls.

On crunching snow, the descent leads over alpine meadows and open forests. In the distance, views extend across the Jura chain and the winter landscape glistening in the sun. Finally, you reach the Buvette des Amis de La Chia, where you can round off the hike.
