Description
Davos Monstein sits atop a sunny terrace above the Landwasser valley. Unlike the urban Davos, here the buildings constructed of wood and partly covered with larch shingles are striking – typical of the former Walser settlement.
In actual fact it would be better to start the leg in the complete other direction... the temptation to enjoy a local Monsteiner before you start the hike is considerable. This probably isn’t a great idea, though, as 1,000 metres of elevation gain await you as soon as you get going. Luckily, there are places to take a break in Sertig Dörfli.
The trail starts off steeply, following the stream all the way to the Oberalp. The Alpine huts catch the eye along the way. You follow a gravelled road for a short while before you’re back on the trail, climbing up and up. The landscape is particularly beautiful in autumn, when the bushes and grass are radiant in green, yellow and red simultaneously. Having left Fanezmeder and Bodma behind you, the final climb up the Fanez Pass begins. This section gets increasingly rocky. It’s worth taking a break at the mountain pass, which lies at an altitude of 2,580 metres, both to regain your strength and to enjoy the view. If you have binoculars with you, with a bit of luck you might be able to spot some bearded vultures, which circle the Älplihora.
At this point, the descent begins, with the barren mountain slopes around the Hoch Ducan offering striking views. It seems that they’re made up of nothing but boulders, in stark contrast to the green mountainsides on the left-hand side. This combination is typical for the Dukantal valley, which you now slowly leave behind you as you follow the Ducanbach stream.
The following section is the final descent through the beautiful larch and Swiss stone pine forest. Looking out over the Sertigtal valley, your destination comes into view. If you have a few minutes to spare, a detour to the waterfall is well worth your while. After this, there’s no doubt that you’ve truly earned a Monsteiner beer.
